GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The August 26, 1885 Colorado Transcript tells the sad tale of young Harry Doolittle. Harry–“a remarkably bright little fellow aged about 13 years”–was visiting his uncle, Mot Johnson, at Cold Spring Ranch (approximate location of the Rock Rest). He and two little girls were picking currents on South Table Mountain. The children had been scaring each other by pretending to see snakes.

Harry spotted some currents in a jumble of rocks in a ravine, but in approaching them he was bitten by a rattlesnake. He ran, screaming, down the mountain. His companions saw and heard him, but thought he was still playing, so didn’t check on him.

Some time later, the girls finished their berrying and headed back down the mountain. About half a mile down the path, they found Harry, nearly dead. He gasped, “Oh, girls! I’m drying! Bring me some water!” One of the girls remained with him while the other ran to Mr. Johnson’s house. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson run to his aid, giving him whiskey “in the hope of relieving him from his suffering. Using it in profusion the little fellow was revived sufficiently to relate what had occurred.”

The Johnsons carried him to their house then took him to his mother’s house. Dr. Kelly was called, but it was too late to save the boy. His run down the mountain had pumped the venom throughout his body. By the time the Johnsons reached him, his leg was black from hip to foot. Young Harry had tried to suck the venom from the bite, which was on his calf, but to no avail.

Harry was buried in the Golden cemetery. The funeral “was attended by an immense concourse of people among whom were hundreds of little Harry’s playmates and school-fellows.”

The sympathies of this whole community are with the heart-broken mother, the little brothers and sister and the many relatives of the deceased.
