Golden History Moment
Golden had two interurban routes from Denver. The first arrived in 1891 and came through Lakewood. The second opened in 1904 and came through Arvada. From 1904 until 1949, Golden had rail tracks running along the middle of Washington Avenue from 12th to 13th Street. In 1904, that was a reasonable use of the street, but as time passed and more people began driving (and parking) automobiles, our principle thoroughfare was needed for cars.
The January 6, 1949 Colorado Transcript announced that the Interurban cars were being rerouted so they would no longer run down Washington Avenue.
After January of 1949, both the Lakewood and Arvada lines terminated on 13th Street, east of Washington Avenue. Some cities buried old streetcar rails beneath a layer of asphalt, but according to the Transcript article, Golden planned to pull up the rails immediately.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
