Golden History Moment

Public Service Announcement from the July 9, 1942 Colorado Transcript – enlarge

The July 9, 1942 Colorado Transcript reported busy times in Golden. The United States was fully engaged in World War II. Many of the town’s young people were serving in the military, while others worked long hours in the industries that supported the war effort.

On the home front, women were kept busy trying to cook decent meals with many common ingredients being rationed. Every household had its Victory Garden.

Children were running scrap drives, collecting paper, metal, rubber, and even leftover cooking grease for use in the war effort.

Farmers were working overtime, producing great quantities of food for use both overseas and at home.

As if this wasn’t enough, Golden’s Volunteer Fire Department had been fighting a series of weed fires. Many acres had burned in North Golden, on North Table Mountain, at the west end of 9th Street, and in Pleasant View.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
