ARTSWEEK Golden Festival Begins
9AM 4th Annual Plein Air Event Begins
If you walk around town today, you may encounter people painting some of our lovely scenery. These “Plein Air” artists will be working on their paintings between this morning and noon Saturday. The paintings will be on display at a reception on Monday, 5-7PM. Some of them will be available for purchase!
8-10AM DeLong Park Weed Busters @ DeLong Park
9AM Public Art Commission Meeting @ City Hall
The Public Art Commission will discuss the “Itty Bitty” art projects being installed along Washington Avenue and the Clear Creek path. More than half of them have been installed and they will all be in place before a planned public tour on July 13th.
According to the budget shown in the March meeting packet, they will spend $49,000 on an Art Framework Plan, $25,600 for maintenance work on the existing collection, $11,500 on a video about three of the pieces in the collection, $45,000 for one or more new large projects, and $20,000 for small art projects. The itty-bitty art being installed around downtown right now was commissioned for $500/piece.
They are looking for public input regarding the future direction for our public art collection. To that end, they ask that you take an online survey. You must be registered and signed in to Guiding Golden to take the survey.
While you’re on guidinggolden, you might also want to take the survey about the Golden Informer (the monthly newsletter that’s mailed to every household in town). That one also requires that you be registered and signed in.

Golden History Moment
The July 7, 1968 Colorado Transcript included an article titled “Old Landmark to Disappear.” The building in question was the Colorado Central Railroad freight house, built during the summer of 1870 in anticipation of the first train to reach Golden. It also served as Golden’s passenger depot during several intervals.
The freight house appears in many old photos and maps, including the 1882 Birdseye View Map of Golden:
Last week, Stuart Sipkin gave a great program at the History Museum, explaining how he uses Google Earth to determine exactly where historic photographs were taken. I thought you might be interested in one of methods I use to locate the site of old buildings.
I often use old maps and compare them to Google Satellite images. I highlight the street grid shown on the map and resize the Google imagine until the streets align. Here’s how I located the old freight house:
The 1870 brick building was replaced by a steel structure, which is still used by the railroads that serve Coors.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
