GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Jefferson County Courthouse and Sheriff’s Residence/Jail – enlarge those buildings

The September 23, 1926 Colorado Transcript described an attempted jailbreak. At that time, the Jefferson County jail was located at 16th and Washington, next to the County Courthouse. The Sheriff and his family lived in the same building. At that time, there were eight prisoners in the jail.

While making his daily inspection of the jail Tuesday, Sheriff Johnson discovered that a section of the woodwork of one of the windows had been sawed through and that the men had been at work digging the mortar from between the brick.

There were eight prisoners in the jail at that time. They had been disguising the sawed-through areas by pressing soap and tissue over the cuts. After discovering the damage, the Sheriff and his staff searched the cell and found tools that the prisoners had fashioned using some of the plumbing. One tool was a saw that they had made, using a razor. With that, they had managed to saw partway through one of the iron bars. The other was a simple metal pipe that they planned to use to incapacitate any guards who got in their way.

The prisoners were moved to cells on the second floor and questioned, one by one. Three of them had been working on a prison work gang on the Golden Gate Canyon road, but their guards had decided they were too dangerous for such duty. They were being temporarily housed in the County jail in Golden, prior to being shipped back to the state penitentiary in Canyon City.

The other five prisoners claimed that those three “hard cases” were pressuring them to support the attempted escape.
