Colorado will ban use of single-use plastic bags on January 2, 2024. Our Sustainability Board wondered whether Golden could implement the change early, so they asked the City Attorney. She said no. For the year 2023, consumers will be charged 10 cents/bag for either plastic or recycled paper bags. Beginning in 2024, plastic bags will be banned entirely, and the fee will still be charged for single-use paper bags. They asked the City Attorney whether Golden could charge a higher fee per bag and she said yes.
On July 1, 2024, specific types of plastic material or products, including containers, packaging, and labeling will be banned. The board asked the City Attorney whether Golden could enact that change earlier and she said no. They asked if they could expand the list of banned items to include utensils, cups, or plates, and she said yes.
The Board asked whether Golden could expand the list of banned plastic items to include utensils, cups, and plates. She said yes–after July 1, 2024.
Beginning January 1, 2024, polystyrene (Styrofoam) will be banned for use as to-go containers.
In other news, the Sustainability Board will review ways to expand access to recycling and organic waste to multifamily and commercial areas. They will review the four bids received from solar garden developers and discuss next steps on that effort.

The July 27, 1905 Colorado Transcript included an article, probably written by pioneer George West, titled “Famous Indian Battle Ground Site for Amusement Garden.” Editor West, the perpetual booster, was making a case for someone to build an amusement park at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon. He envisioned “a pleasure garden, with a dancing pavilion of generous size, and other accessories along these lines….” He pointed out that Welch ditch could provide irrigation water for the gardens, and our new Beaver Brook water source would provide pure drinking water.
The amusement park never happened, but I was interested in his description of the Indian battle. He claimed that there were remnants of an old Indian fort near the mouth of the canyon, and gave the late Chief Colorow as his source regarding the battle.
…it was away back in the ’40’s, or some twenty years before the advent of the white men, that a most sanguinary battle was fought here between his tribe of Utes and a large party of Arapahoes and Cheyennes. Many were killed on both sides, resulting in a drawn battle, and from that time forward until the white settlers filled the valley the locality was sedulously avoided by both the mountain and plains Indians.
As practically the same story was told us by the old trappers and mountaineers with whom we came in contact here in the early days, we are compelled to believe the legend as vouched for by old Colorow.
