Golden History Moment
The April 30, 1908 Colorado Transcript featured a front page article trumpeting DAILY HALF HOUR TRAMWAY SERVICE. The service at the time was hourly, not half hourly, but the Tramway brought tourists, and tourists were vital for the business community. Reading the article that followed showed the headline to be aspirational, rather than factual.
With the resumption of the summer schedule on the Tramway about June 1, daily half hour service will probably be inaugurated between Golden and Denver. To meet the demands of increasing traffic with indications of unprecedented travel to Golden during the coming season, the management of the Tramway is considering the establishment of more frequent service.
The Transcript of this era included many such aspirational articles. Reading them 100+ years later, it’s sometimes hard to separate what was from what the editor thought should be.
In conversation last Sunday with a representative of the Transcript, Vice President and General Manager J. A. Beeler declined to disclose the plans of the company for the increased service…. However, there is little doubt that the remarkable increase in traffic will result in the new schedule being adopted June 1.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
