GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The Candlelight Walk was still a new and evolving event on December 1, 1989. Beginning at 4:30, the Golden Chamber of Commerce hosted a community party at Foothills Art Center. Musicians from the Jefferson Symphony were on hand to provide holiday music.
At 6:30, the crowd emerged to watch as the giant tree across the street was illuminated. They then lit their candles and, holding them aloft, strolled down the hill, enjoying performances by roving singers along the way. The Golden Visitors Center had not yet been built, so the crowd paused on and near the Washington Avenue bridge to watch as the City turned on the lights.
Afterwards, people migrated over to the parking lot outside the Golden Pioneer Museum. There, the Daughters of the American Revolution, which ran the museum at that time, hosted a bonfire. The crowd sang carols and roasted chestnuts. Museum volunteers served hot cider.
In 2020, the world was dealing with a global pandemic. Large group gatherings were out of the question, so the City and Chamber came up with a novel way for us to celebrate. They commissioned commemorative LED candles and gave them to the community, encouraging everyone to place them in their windows.
On December 4, 2020, the City broadcast the tree-lighting live, using Facebook Live. You can watch that too!
