Golden History Moment

I received some welcome feedback on yesterday’s historic photo of North Golden. I quoted the Denver Public Library’s estimate that the photo was taken between 1876 and 1881. I received a correction from the authority on the Colorado Central Railroad. Dan Abbott, author of Colorado Central Railroad, wrote, “The photo of north Golden was a William G. Chamberlain photo and dates to September 26, 1870 when the first train arrived in Golden from Denver over the new Colorado Central Railroad, notice the freighthouse still under construction. See also p.21 of my book Colorado Central Railroad.” Thanks Dan!

North Side Garage from the Golden History Museum collection – Click to enlarge

I’ve always been intrigued by this photo from the History Museum’s collection. The North Side Garage…where on the north side? Was it in one of the residential neighborhoods? So I did some research in old Colorado Transcripts.

The first reference I found to the business was in 1923. An article said that Marvin Swena, the manager was building a 20×30 tile and stucco addition to add space to store cars. The business was located at 815 Washington Ave.

A 1925 ad said that the North Side Garage was now an agency for New Star and Durant Cars (“with the million dollar motor”). “Our Service Station is complete in every detail, from repairs to gasoline, oil and accessories. McComb Tire and Tubes–None Better>

From 1935-1945, the same building operated as the Noble Garage and Top Shop. From 1948-49 it was Johnson’s Super Service.

In 1950 it became Hugo Buerger Buick, and remained so until that business moved to 8th Street in 1960. At that point, the building was torn down.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
