GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Conceptual drawing of the Magic Mountain Cavalry Post – Golden History Museum Collection – enlarge

The January 30, 1958 Colorado Transcript announced that the first building had been completed at the planned Magic Mountain amusement park. The public was invited to a dedication and flag raising ceremony. The Westernaires Cavalry team was on hand to participate in the celebration.

The log-type building is the Cavalry Post and Stockade. It will be formally dedicated in memory of the U. S. Cavalry, credited historically with making the old west safe for settlement and development by the pioneers.

Magic Mountain was an ambitious plan to build a Disneyland-like amusement park here in Golden. The developers failed to find enough investors and the park quickly went bankrupt. The site reopened in the early 1970s under new ownership and operated for several decades under the name of Heritage Square.

The stockade was located just south of the entrance to the park, and it lasted well into the Heritage Square era.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
