CANDIDATES FORUM

6-8:30PM City Council and Mayoral Candidate Forum, Hosted by Leadership Golden Alumni Association @ City Hall
This is the second of two candidate forums. At their September 19th forum, the League of Women Voters asked questions regarding affordable housing, the proposed property tax increase to fund the fire department, and managing growth after losing our 1% growth limit.

Leadership Golden has not given the candidates the specific questions for tonight, but we have given them the following general topics:

Ten year vision
Crowding along the creek
Supporting Golden business
Parking (Mayoral candidates only)
Density (District candidates only)

I will be moderating tonight’s forum, so if you plan to attend in person, I’ll see you there!

If you plan to watch online, here’s how you do it:

Go to the City’s Agenda page:
https://www.cityofgolden.net/government/city-council/agenda-minutes-web-casts-meeting-schedule/

A few minutes before 6PM, the words “view event” will appear to the right of “Leadership Golden Candidate Forum.” If you don’t see those words, you’ll have to keep refreshing/reloading the page until they appear. The refresh button varies by browser, but it’s usually some variation on a curly arrow:

Once “View Event” appears, click it, sit back and enjoy!

Tonight’s forum will also be recorded, so you can watch it later.

The October 17, 1935 Colorado Transcript reported that this group of men were well pleased with a trip they had made through Clear Creek Canyon. They drove from Golden to Idaho Springs, and concluded that it would be an excellent route for a highway. Accordingly, they set aside $1.5 million in federal highway funds to begin building the road.

You may wonder: if there was no road, how did they drive from Golden to Idaho Springs? They rode in specially-adapted automobiles that had been equipped with small locomotive engines in front and wheels suitable for train tracks beneath.

Despite this agreement amongst the movers & shakers in 1935, it took another 17 years to complete the road. There were many administrative delays, and then World War II diverted all labor and materials to the war effort. The highway finally opened in 1952. By that time, the railroad had been removed from the canyon, so the highway engineers were able to build on the old railroad bed.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
