CITY MEETINGS
5:30-7:30PM Heart of Golden Community Meeting @ City Council Chambers
Last year at this time (p. 80 of the packet), the City was estimating that a new municipal center would cost $50-70 million. They were planning to finance it with Certificates of Participation (COP), which do not require citizen approval. Several things have changed since then.
• The cost of borrowing has increased sharply.
• A number of employees are working at least part time out of home offices.
• City staff may be moving to four day/32 hour weeks
• We have a new City Manager.
Some or all of these changes may be factors in the following announcement.
Facing higher-than-expected construction costs, city staff will begin to explore alternative solutions to the Heart of Golden Phase 1 project scope for new municipal facilities. As City staff consider the next steps on the project, we are seeking your engagement.
Join us on Tuesday, August 15, at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers for a project update and community discussion to share new ideas and reassess ways to move forward with important facility improvements.
If you cannot attend the meeting in person, you can still be involved by reviewing the presentation and contributing to the discussion. Feedback opportunities will be posted to GuidingGolden.com the day of the meeting, and will be open through August 31. City Council will be briefed on the community meeting at their September 12 Council Meeting.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The August 15, 1877 Colorado Transcript mentioned a problem relating to our new railroad. The route through Clear Creek canyon attracted many business travelers, as well as tourists who were eager to see the marvelous scenery.
Apparently, Denver businesses had decided that canyon walls were a perfect place to advertise. The Rocky Mountain News was the first one to write about this:
Colorado has the sublimest scenery in the world, and it is also the best adapted to advertising purposes. An ocean of paint and an army of advertising agents could advertise all the pills and pile remedies in the country in letters eleven feet high.
The Rocky Mountain News – June 12, 1877
The News said that someone had already painted advertisements for diarrhea medicine in the Garden of the Gods, and that they were beginning to mark up Clear Creek canyon. They were pushing for a new law that would forbid such “vandalism,” but they suggested that “instant death at the hand of anybody who captures the offender in the act” would also be appropriate.
The Transcript staff took a tour of the canyon and discovered that several Denver businesses “have covered every prominent point from the mouth of the cañon [canyon] to Idaho [Springs] with daubs of flaring paint. By all means, let the hanging commence.”
Our founding fathers really didn’t like vandals.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
