Golden History Moment
The September 3, 1879 Colorado Transcript boasted of Golden’s up-to-date telephone service. In the 1870s, telephony was the hottest technology around, and it was a fiercely competitive business. Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison were both hoping to dominate the field by being the first provider to serve every town and hamlet in the country.
The race came to Golden in September of 1879. Bell Telephone had been installing new polls between Denver and Golden, while Colorado Edison planned to use the ones already in place, belonging to Western Union. They both needed to string telephone wire to connect the two towns.
Bell Telephone began the work in Denver at 8:30AM on September 1, 1879 and reached Golden at 7PM. By 7:30 that evening, they had placed their first call to Denver.
Colorado Edison completed their wiring and placed their first call ten minutes later.
The neck-and-neck competition was exciting, but short-lived. By December of 1879, Edison’s telephone company had retreated from Golden, leaving us with Bell Telephone as our sole provider.
