Golden History Moment
The March 4, 1937 Colorado Transcript was full of enthusiasm about the growth and development happening in Golden. The headline trumpeted,
Many Plan To Build New Homes In Golden
More Than Half Million Dollars to Be Spent Here On Buildings During Year
The article goes on to explain that Golden had a payroll in excess of $1,250,000. Despite the ongoing Depression, Golden was doing fairly well–particularly since Prohibition had been repealed, and Coors had gone back to full production of beer.
The article listed people who had recently built new homes and those who were planning to start one soon. It explained what a good investment a home was over time and urged people to get going, since construction materials were becoming more expensive.
In addition to the new houses, the Field House at the School of Mines was under construction, as was a “camp cottage” near 24th and East Streets, and a new building at the Coors plant. For extra inspiration, they added a brief article about a house that had recently been built and occupied in one day up on Brick Yard Road.
The articles may have been timed to coincide with a 2-page advertising spread highlighting “Local Merchants and Artisans” involved in construction. Both of the lumberyards–Duvall-Davison and Deffenbaugh’s–had advertisements. Wm. Gross advertised plumbing and heating services. Quaintance Investment Co. offered both “A Choice Location for Your Home” (real estate) and insurance to cover the new home. Jack Rose offered Painting and Decorating, while the Johnson Brothers advertised Plaster and Stucco Work. There were ads for Golden Fire Bricks, Sand and Gravel, and Trees and Shrubs for the new yard. The Colorado Central Power Company suggested “A Modern Electric Kitchen,” while the Public Service Company of Colorado recommended “Automatic Gas Heating and Automatic Hot Water Service.” The Golden Building & Loan offered help with financing.
A small box on the page listed HOME ESSENTIALS: A Warm Fire, A Comfortable Chair, Good Light, and the Colorado Transcript. (That does sound nice!)
The home-building wave was of limited duration, because World War II started in 1941 and most labor and building materials were channeled into the war effort.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
