CITY MEETINGS

7:30AM Citizens Budget Advisory Committee Meeting @ City Hall
CBAC will review the July Sales, Use, and Lodging Tax report. The City is still doing well, but it’s definitely not growing as fast as it was for the past two years. We have been significantly exceeding projected revenues; now we’re closer to just meeting projections. The report is included in the meeting packet.

They will discuss Communications. I’m not sure what that is, though I have heard one CBAC member say the members may be expected to lobby for the City’s spending plans, while another CBAC member said they would be expected to listen to their friends and neighbors and tell CBAC what citizens are thinking & saying about public finance. That may be clarified today.

The agenda shows a line item for the 2024 Capital Improvement Plan, but there are no materials included on that subject.

They will have a preliminary discussion about the 2024 Operating Budget. The Finance Department has provided a report showing “Comparative Budget Changes 2021-2024” (which is in the meeting packet). The bottom line is as follows:

Our revenues have gone from $35 million in 2021 to a projected $41 million in 2024.

Our expenditures have gone from $31.5 million in 2021 to a proposed $42.5 million in 2024.

They will discuss Community Conversations. This is a series of three group discussions regarding Affordable Housing–whether we need more, and if so how much we need. They held their first conversation in August. The second will be next Wednesday, September 27th, and the third will be October 4th. They want a different group of participants for each conversation, so it’s not too late to get involved. You must register in advance: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeKyfpjf01_R0BUhf6X0V_Syad5DFHD3ycEwpNiG0WQ-ndrxQ/viewform.

6:30PM Planning Commission Study Session @ City Hall
Since tonight is a study session, the Planning Commission will not be reviewing any cases/applications, and there will be no public comment. Tonight’s topic is notification requirements for land use applications. Typically, this means that people living or owning property within a certain distance of a proposed change would be notified and invited to attend a neighborhood meeting. The Commission will review our current rules and compare them to those used by other local governments. See the meeting packet for more information.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The September 20, 1934 Colorado Transcript rejoiced over the number of visitors attracted to Golden by our indoor swimming pool. Many Denver companies had hosted pool parties, as had several Denver Boy Scout troops.

Locals were enjoying the pool too. Both Coors Brewery and Coors Porcelain had hosted parties at the pool, and the Transcript was sponsoring children’s parties every Saturday morning.

The tramway was offering special round-trip Sunday excursion fares, which had also helped attract visitors from Denver. The Transcript reported that the Sunday excursions were expected to bring more than 3,000 visitors by the end of September.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
