CITY MEETING

6:30PM Downtown Development Authority Meeting
The DDA board will consider a grant request from Gateway Station (NE corner of 13th and Washington). That building contains 10 commercial tenants and 35 residential units. They want to make a number of structural/safety improvements to the building, which would total up to $27,560 The grant committee was divided over the request, with some saying the DDA should only support improvements visible to the public. These would total $8,450. In either case, the grant request is for DDA to cover 50% of the total cost, so half of either $27,560 or $8,450. The detailed proposal is included in the meeting packet.

The owners of 1100 Washington (the former mortuary/future restaurant) is requesting an extension on their TIF agreement. Due to delays caused by COVID and construction delays, they hope to extend the agreement from its current end date in 2038 to 2044.

City staff will provide updates on several other projects, including outdoor dining, Coors 150th anniversary celebration (to be held downtown on September 30th), repairs to the 1250 Jackson Street parking garage, overhead decorative lighting for Miners Alley, Calvary Church’s plan to build affordable housing on 14th Street, a proposed TIF agreement with Clayworks/CoorsTek, and a proposed TIF agreement with the owners of 1104/1106 Washington Avenue (the former florist shop and antiques store).

To learn more about any of these topics, review the meeting packet and watch the meeting. The meeting will be shown live through the Agenda page. The recording will be posted on that same page sometime tomorrow or later.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
by
Guest Historian – Golden History Museum Curator Stephanie Gilmore

Photo from the May 18, 1962 issue of Life Magazine showing Jimmy Hoffa on a visit to Golden – Golden History Museum Collection

In 1962, the infamous Jimmy Hoffa visited Golden to attempt to organize Coors workers. Some Golden High School students decided to protest his arrival, based upon the allegations of corruption, ties to organized crime, and unethical practices for which he was known.

In the Golden History Museum & Park collection, we have a May, 18, 1962 issue of LIFE Magazine featuring a story about Hoffa’s visit to Golden. On pages 2-3 there is an oversize photo spread showing Jimmy Hoffa at left, and Golden resident and high school student Lynn Van Horn, right, blowing a raspberry at the union leader.

A caption below the photo reads: “The familiar, stuffy figure at left has dished out more than his share of raspberries. For instance, he referred publicly to Bobby Kennedy as a ‘little monster.’ But in Golden, Colo. Jimmy Hoffa, the bellicose boss of the Teamsters Union, was on the receiving end of a moist and well-directed Bronx cheer from Lynn Van Horn (at right). She was part of a sassy retinue of high school and college students walking along with him to a meeting of workers from a plant he was trying to organize. Jimmy spoke softly to the workers and, breaking the image of the tough guy who wouldn’t take back talk even from his own grandmother, he actually beamed at his young hecklers.”

Come see other interesting Golden High School memorabilia at the Golden History Museum & Park’s exhibit, Old School: Golden High Turns 150. There is a free opening reception this Thursday, August 24th, from 6-8pm at the Golden History Museum.
