GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Washington Avenue with freight wagons, 1865 – Denver Public Library Western History Collection – enlarge

The November 1, 1860 Western Mountaineer reported on several incoming “trains.” That term referred to wagon trains, pulled by horses, mules, or oxen.

W. A. H. Loveland & Co.’s train arrived in this city on Saturday last, and discharged at their store on Washington Avenue.

Mr. John Armor’s train of twenty wagons arrived on Monday, and discharged a portion of their freight, the balance of which goes to the mountains.

Judge McWhirt and W. S. Benton have a train of twenty wagons upon the road, with goods for their new store which is now being fitted up on Washington Avenue.

The Colorado Central Railroad brought the first railroad trains to Golden on September 26, 1870 – Dan Abbott Collection – enlarge

The Colorado Central Railroad opened in September of 1870, providing a faster and cheaper way to transport goods. This brought an almost immediate end to the era of big wagon trains.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
