Lunar News

Blood Moon from May, 2022 – Alan Pinkus – enlarge

If you’re up super-early this morning (as I know many of my readers are), you might catch the lunar eclipse that’s taking place between 1AM and 7AM. The Colorado Sun had a good article, which says, “The moon will start to get red just after 2 a.m. and reach a maximum eclipse about two hours later at 3:59 a.m.” Read the rest of the article….

In other lunar news, the moon is full today/tonight. It will rise at 5:01PM and set at 7:54AM tomorrow morning. (source)

Golden History Moment

I had always understood that the Kiwanis club was inspired to build Parfet Park by the sudden, unexpected death of their president, G.W. Parfet, in August of 1924. In reading the November 8, 1923 Colorado Transcript, I learned that the park was already in the planning stages.

The new high school on 10th Street was under construction in 1923, and there was great interest in improving the area around it, to help make it a showcase and a point of community pride. In October, 1923, the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce decided to buy the aged Nichols house across the street from the new school, and turn that property and the adjacent city dump into a park. The original plan was to finance it “by subscription,” meaning that the two organizations would organize a fund-raising campaign.

The November 8, 1923 Transcript reported the club members had decided that a City park should be funded by all taxpayers. They took the matter to City Council, and Council agreed to purchase the property. Accordingly, they did. The old house was razed the following July.

There were feelings of regret, as it was one of the oldest buildings in town, constructed in 1859 by the Boston Company, and birthplace of Golden’s first newspaper, the Western Mountaineer. The Daughters of the American Revolution placed a monument to mark the spot where it stood.

On September 1, 1925, a year after Mr. Parfet’s death, the Kiwanis club voted to name the new park in his honor.
