GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The M in 2007 – enlarge

According to the December 12, 1935 Colorado Transcript, that was the first year that the M turned red. The bulbs were changed as a surprise on December 7th–the night of the freshman ball. It stayed red for a month, until January 6, 1936.

The “M” on Mount Zion was built in 1908. It was lighted (with temporary wiring) for the first time in October of 1931. The result was so striking that students raised money for permanent wiring, which was installed the following March. When the permanent wiring was ready, the Governor came to ceremonially flip the switch.

It wasn’t until 1932 that anyone thought to check the ownership of the land under the M. They learned that it belonged to Ernest Ramstetter, but he readily agreed to sell the acre of ground under the M.

In 2008, the incandescent bulbs were replaced by L.E.D.s.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
