GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The November 20, 1990 Golden Transcript announced that Heritage Square had been purchased by the adjacent quarry. The purchase price was not disclosed, but another bidder stated that the minimum bid had been $1.05 million.
The shopping/amusement park had been foreclosed upon by Silverado Savings and Loan in 1986. Silverado subsequently collapsed in 1988. Heritage Square was one of thousands of assets that had to be liquidated in the aftermath of the nationwide S&L crisis.
The same issue of the Transcript announced that three other commercial properties were on the market because the industrial banks in Golden and Evergreen were being liquidated. A seven-unit apartment complex at 1111 12th Street (map) was for sale, as was the Big Tree Mobile Home Park, located at 23rd and Jackson Street.
The Armory building was also in foreclosure. “And it could go for a pretty good price. At least that is what the real estate agent handing the historic Armory Building…predicted last week.”
The cobblestone building had an outstanding mortgage of $320,000 and three years of unpaid taxes totaling $45,000. The team in charge of liquidation hoped to find a buyer who would pay “a little more than $400,000.”
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
