GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The December 8, 1983 Golden Transcript detailed the seasonal activities happening in Golden. Santa was due to arrive at the Railroad Museum on Saturday, where he would ride on the narrow gauge train along with the kids.
The Historic Homes Tour was scheduled for Sunday. The tour was organized by the Mount Lookout Chapter of the DAR (who managed the Golden Pioneer Museum at the time) and the Golden Landmarks Association. In addition to five historic homes, it included stops at the Pioneer Museum, the Astor House, and the Guy Hill Schoolhouse.
The Library was having an open house on Thursday the 15th, complete with refreshments and holiday music.
The Astor House was hosting a Victorian Christmas Party on Friday night, complete with a bonfire in front of the museum. Father Christmas was scheduled to visit, carolers were lined up to provide the music, and Gene Child was planning to roast chestnuts.
There was a city-wide home decorating contest, with first prize being a dinner for four at the Briarwood Inn.
Then, as now, the Holiday Art Market at Foothills Art Center was open seven days a week.
I was interested to see that the brand “Olde Golden Christmas” was in use so early, so I looked back to see when it originated. Apparently it was invented in 1982. Downtown Golden was economically depressed at that time, and “Olde Golden Christmas” was a grassroots effort by the Golden Chamber, Golden Landmarks Association, and the Golden Cultural Alliance to make Golden a more attractive place to visit and shop.
(It worked!)
Olde Golden Christmas has now morphed into Olde Golden Holidays and the number of events grows every year. Don’t miss tomorrow morning’s parade, or the free horse-drawn carriage rides afterward!
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
