Golden History Moment

Albert Jones in 1900 and considerably later – Golden History Museum collection – enlarge

Albert Jones served multiple terms as Mayor of Golden, first from 1925-1928, then 1931-1939. He wrote a weekly column in the Transcript, which always provided interesting details about the municipal concerns of the day.

“The Mayor’s Own Column” of March 1, 1928 tells us that the fire department was late to a fire because the starter wasn’t working on the firetruck.

Clear Creek was being polluted by the mines and mills upstream, and so far no one had found the legal means to stop them. Mayor Jones was hopeful that the Walton League would have some success. He thought that having fish in our stream would improve our tourism business.

He mused on whether Golden was big enough to support a hospital. He acknowledged that they were expensive undertakings, but thought it was worth discussing. In any case, he thought 14th and Ford would be the best location for it.

He often concluded the columns by reporting on his “rounds,” which meant walking around town, talking to all and sundry. One citizen thought we needed a new bridge at Washington Avenue, while another thought the old one just need a few extra props to shore it up.

A third Golden citizen was annoyed that he was having to keep his dogs tied up. The town was in the midst of a rabies scare, and this man thought it was all a hoax–that those who boarded dogs and sold medicine were just inventing an epidemic to make money.

A lady complained about the ice and snow on the sidewalks. She forecast that Golden’s elderly citizens might be hit by cars, because the unshoveled walks were forcing them to walk in the street.

A visitor to town made him feel temporarily better by praising Golden, but then deflated him by saying, “of course Golden citizens will never set the world afire due to their old fashioned ways.”

He concluded with, “They say public officials are first sworn in and then cussed out.”

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
