Golden History Moment

Prospector Park, before Highway 6 – Bill Robie Collection – enlarge

The August 29, 1946 Colorado Transcript celebrated the commencement of 21 new apartment buildings, which would accommodate 80 families. The GI bill was enabling millions of returning soldiers to attend college. Many were choosing the Colorado School of Mines.

Housing was very limited and materials to build new apartments was hard to locate during the war. The School had managed to locate some military surplus buildings in Texas and Leadville. They were being dismantled and brought by railroad to Golden, where they would be reassembled.

The new married student housing neighborhood was named “Prospector Park.” Six of those buildings were moved again in 1950, when Highway 6 was built.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
