8AM-3PM Golden Community Pride Days
The annual weekend-long 2022 Community Pride Days event will be held on Saturday, September 17 & Sunday, September 18 at 1300 Catamount Drive (map). Bring your non-hazardous and unwanted junk for free disposal by the City!

Participants will be required to show proof of residency at the gate in the form of a State-issued ID. City water bills will NOT be accepted as proof of residency. Unsure if your residence is within city limits? Check out Jeffco.us/awiz/ to find out for sure.

For customers of the City’s Pay-As-You-Throw program, there is no need to wait for Pride Days with the new large item pickup service. Just call Republic Services at 303-277-8727 to request a pickup of your large item at no additional cost to you. Open to every participating household, once per calendar year.

Community Pride Days will accept

  • Metal for recycling
  • Trash
  • Electronic Waste

Items NOT Accepted

Don’t see the disposal service you need? Check out the Hard to Recycle Materials Guide to local recycling options for materials that are not commonly accepted in curbside waste programs. Because these vendors are not affiliated with the City and are privately owned operations, their information may change at any time. We suggest calling ahead.

Golden History Moment

Originally, the Denver, Lakewood, and Golden Interurban was pulled by a steam locomotive. Later, it was powered by overhead electric lines. – Golden History Museum Collection – enlarge

Did you know that Golden used to have not one, but two street railways that served downtown Golden?

In 1891, the Denver, Lakewood, & Golden began running from Denver to Golden.  Its right of way ran through Lakewood, entered Golden via South Golden Road, and terminated at the northeast corner of 13th and Washington–the spot currently occupied by Indulge Wine Bar.  The DL&G ran coal-powered steam locomotives.

In 1904, a second rail line came to town–the Denver & Northwestern.  That line ran past Lakeside Amusement Park, through Arvada, along 44th Street, and entered downtown Golden via 12th Street.  The cars crossed Washington at 12th Street, turned left at Arapahoe, and terminated at the northwest corner of 13th and Washington–directly across the street from the DL&G station.  On their way out of Golden, they ran north along Washington Avenue for one block, then exited along 12th Street.  The D&NW’s cars were powered by electricity from overhead lines. Eventually, the same company bought the line that ran through Lakewood and electrified that one as well.

Streetcar ridership began to decline in the 1920s and 1930s, as more people began driving automobiles.  Traffic picked up again during World War II, due to gasoline rationing and other shortages, but plummeted after the war.  In 1950, both commuter lines were discontinued in favor of bus service.

The current light rail line uses much of the same right of way through Lakewood that the DL&G blazed, back in the 1890s.  This time, it terminates at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
