Golden History Moment
September of this year marked the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Colorado Central Railroad. Golden people were filled with anticipation as they waited for it. The town, which had been declining in population and economic base for years, was suddenly growing again. I wrote about it several times during September (scroll down to the history section in each post):
9/21 – 150 Years Ago – The Impending Railroad
9/22 – Waiting for the Train – Part 2
9/26 – A Glorious Day for the Railroad
Last night, I was wondering how the town was doing several weeks later, so I checked the November 2, 1870 Colorado Transcript.
George West (owner of the Transcript) had just returned from a trip to “the United States” (we were a territory at the time). He was gloating over the speed and ease of the journey.
In ’68, the date of our last trip, we swore to never again cross the plains until we could do so upon a railroad, and how faithfully we kept the pledge our readers can judge when we say that on the 28th of September we took the cars of the Colorado Central Company at Golden City for a continuous trip across the plains…. The trip across the plains in one of Pullman’s elegant Palace Sleeping Cars is an agreeable change from the tedious and soul-harrowing one of former years….
After a glowing description of the journey, he went on to praise Golden’s growth over the four weeks he had been away. He detailed each of the new buildings being constructed. I tried to map them out on the 1878 Willits Map of Golden. It was tricky, because his descriptions were pretty general “on ford street,” and “on the same street”). Anyway, the map above shows my approximations of the buildings springing up in early November, 1870.
Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
