Visit Golden is planning to celebrate “Western Heritage Month” in January, as a tie-in to both the National Western Stock Show and the Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The group will discuss possible events to highlight Golden’s western heritage. Staff will describe a planning marketing campaign to highlight the businesses in the Gateway Village area. This group has also funded a study that will use cell phone data to track visitors and quantify the economic impact for tourism. The study is not yet available, but should be in the coming weeks.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Colorado Transcript ad from 1961 showing the commercial building at 16350 S. Golden Road, and the same building shown on Google Street Images – enlarge

The November 9, 1961 Colorado Transcript included an ad for a new gift shop on South Golden Road. If that building looks familiar, it’s because it’s still there (map).

Today, the building may be most memorable for the murals on the west side. Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, and Marlon Brando were painted about twenty years ago. There was a fourth panel, and after a few years, it was painted over in black paint. When that happened, I realized that I couldn’t remember the subject of that panel. Since the other three were faces, I assumed that it had been a fourth person. I asked a few friends, and they couldn’t remember either.

The image of Castle Rock is reappearing on the 16350 S. Golden Road building (map) – Google Street Images – enlarge

To my delight, the top coat of black paint has begun to fade, and the missing part of the mural is reemerging! Thanks to the passage of time and the sun exposure on that western wall, I’ve been reminded that the mystery painting was Castle Rock on South Table Mountain.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
