GHS HOMECOMING
You’ve probably noticed that the iconic “M” for the School of Mines has morphed into a “G” this week. They did that to honor Golden High School, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. My neighbor, who knows all such things, tells me that a young woman from Golden High School–a junior–got the idea, tracked down the people who could make it happen, and persuaded them that they should do it. We hear that this is the first time in the M’s 115 year history that the M has ever been changed for a non-Mines event. (Thank you, Mines!)
Golden High School is celebrating Homecoming this weekend.
The parade will begin at 5PM. It will start at 17th and Washington, head north on Washington to 12th, and march down 12th Street to the Marv Kay Stadium. All GHS alumni and their families are encouraged to join the parade!
The Homecoming football game will begin at 7PM. They’re playing Palisade.
Washington Avenue will be closed from 4:45-5:45PM. No parking will allowed on 12th Street, so if you’re attending the game, check this map for available lots on the Mines campus.
The Homecoming dance is tomorrow (Saturday) night from 8-11PM in the High School gym.
Come downtown tonight, enjoy the parade, and stay for the game, Congratulations to Golden High School on 150 Golden Years!

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
I wondered how Golden High School had celebrated Homecoming on the school’s 100th anniversary, so I checked the Golden Transcripts from the fall of 1973. To my surprise, the centennial wasn’t mentioned as part of Homecoming.
A crowd of 3,000 spectators filled the grandstand at the School of Mines football field. Despite losing the game (14-0 to Bear Creek), the Transcript declared Homecoming to be “a complete success” and “the most spirited and enthusiastic Homecoming in many a long year.”
The School had celebrated its centennial the previous April. On that occasion, the High School students served a banquet to several hundred alumni in the School cafeteria, followed by a brief concert.
Art Papenfus served as the master of ceremonies and presented maroon and white corsages to five women from “turn of the century classes,” including Floss Maughan Altvater (class of 1908); Viola Seaver and Maud White (1909); Mary Ballinger Kerr (1910); and Blanche Crawford (1911). Maud Priest, who had been teaching at the school since 1932, also received a corsage.
Two recently-returned Viet Nam veterans–Gary Sigler and Bill Angus–were honored with a standing ovation. Mr. Papenfus commented they they were testament to “the quality and caliber of our graduates.”
Mr. and Mrs. Zebulon Pike were celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary that night, so they were brought on stage and regaled with the song, “Young at Heart.”
Principal Orlan Cox said “the school’s spirit was the ‘accumulated memories’ of a century’s students and faculty. This ‘accumulated glory’ forms the base for future triumphs.” He concluded that “If the school continues to head that way, Golden High School will be here 100 years from now.”
We’re halfway there!
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
