GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
Golden Firefighter Tom Young was paralyzed while rescuing a hang glider on July 6, 1990. After six weeks in St. Anthony’s hospital, he moved to Craig Hospital for rehabilitation.
September 20, 1990
In an interview with the Transcript, Tom Young reported that “I can feel down to about my elbows. As far as motor functions go, it’s pretty much just my shoulders and my neck.”
He’s hoping early next year to be back with his own fire department, doing administrative and fire prevention work. “I’m hoping to go back to work with the fire department and the city full time. I don’t think that my handicap will hamper any of the administrative work that I did before, which was approximately 80 percent of my job,’ ’ said Young. A state certified instructor, Young said he also would like to continue helping with training at Golden Volunteer Fire Department.
“Hands-on might be a little difficult,’ ’ he smiled. ‘ Paralyzed from the shoulders down, Young is learning computer skills at Craig that will help put his life back on track. He’s been working on a * ‘sip-and-puff” computer in which he blows or sips air out of straws to type and said he’s probably typing faster that way than he typed with his fingers before his accident.
December 6, 1990
Tom was released from Craig in early December. Since their own house was not wheelchair accessible, the family moved in with Linda’s parents on Easley Road, with plans to build a house of their own next door.
“It’s been a long time. I can’t believe today’s finally here,” said Young’s wife, Linda. “I’m glad to be home.”
To welcome him home, his sister, Kathy Sheehan, decorated trees with yellow ribbons and put up a banner that read “Welcome home, Tom.” The firefighters held a gathering, to welcome him back to the community.
Young plans to return to work with the city of Golden sometime next year.
February 12, 1991
The Youngs were waiting for delivery of a power wheelchair and an accessible van that would enable Tom to return to work. The City was constructing an office for him in City Hall.
April 18, 1991
Tom was on hand when the City dedicated their new fire truck to him.
Young is still experiencing pain, so much so that he has not been able to return to work. He is contemplating the possibility of more surgery to remove bone chips that might be pressing against his spinal column
May 14, 1991
The TV show Rescue 911 aired a reenactment of the accident and the community watched, riveted. In the show, Tom said he had briefly wanted to commit suicide, but had no way to do it. Soon, he realized that he had much to live for, beginning with his wife and children.
August 13, 1991
The Youngs’ new house was well underway. Many local companies and individuals contributed labor and materials. Fund-raisers continued and people kept contributing to the fund that helped pay house and mobility expenses.
Tom is anxious to find ways to repay those who have helped make it a reality, beginning with a housewarming party. “If there was any way I could pay the people back by helping them in any way, I would love to,” he said. “You’ve got to cry a lot. It’s not tears of the past and of pain. It’s more tears of joy.”
January 16, 1992
Tom returned to the hospital to have bone chips removed from his neck. Surgeons would also take bone from his hip and use it to reinforce his spinal column.
February 6, 1992
Tom was home and smiling, in much less pain after the surgery.
The best news of all? Young said he could feel his shirt up and down both arms. It may not sound like much to us, but, to Young and his family, it’s a major step forward in his readjustment.
June 11, 1992
City officials and Tom begin to discuss steps needed for him to return to office–how many hours he could work and what accommodations the city should build. “I’m too young to sit around,” he said wryly.
To be concluded…
