This month, Rick Muriby will be joining us to give an overview of the department of Community & Economic Development of the City of Golden. He will share an overview of the different divisions within this department, including: Downtown Development Authority, Economic Development, Golden Urban Renewal Authority, Planning, Public Art Commission, and Visit Golden. He can share how these entities support the Golden business community as well as answer questions.
This is a hybrid event, you must register in advance to receive the link if you intend to participate via Zoom. It is also offered in person at the Golden Visitors Center. Please register in advance regardless of how you plan to attend.
The Community Development Committee is a roundtable group comprised of City, Chamber, and businesses that provide monthly updates. This monthly meeting is intended to be a strategic meeting of the business community with a focus on local economic development. This group frequently has outside guest speakers or when circumstances allow, they take “field trips” to area businesses. The Community Development Committee is open to guests. Please consider joining us at our next meeting!

Golden History Moment
The July 6, 1977 Golden Daily Transcript included a front page article about the controversy concerning women working as firefighters. At that time, the Pleasant View and Lookout Mountain Fire Departments included women, but Golden and Fairmount remained all male, “…and they like it that way.”
Golden’s fire department has in its by-laws that the force will be male only, according to Chief Gary Granquist. Golden Atty. Russ Sindt said he has not examined the by-laws but believed “the legality would be subject to question.”
Chief Granquist said the department had “no desire for them. We get along fine the way we are.”
Joanne Greenberg was a lieutenant on the Lookout Mountain Fire Department at the time.
She and three other women applied in 1972 and there was a “big stink.” Some of the reasons given for not admitting women then, she said, were that “it’s a biological fact that women scream and faint” during hard times; the women would want to be chief and boss the men around; there’s foul language used at the fire house; and women should be shielded from the hard side of life.
I haven’t figured out exactly when, but Golden did eventually overcome its reluctance to have women in the fire department. We have many now.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
