GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Golden’s shopping district in the 1920s – Denver Public Library Collection – enlarge

About a month ago, I reprinted my favorite “shop local” message from Transcripts of yore:

Golden merchants have an excellent line of Christmas goods and there is no use in journeying to Denver to buy your Christmas goods. Besides, look at the danger of getting murdered, held up, run over or contracting small pox. Buy at home, help your home town and be safe.

The following year, the Transcript offered a similar cautionary tale:

GOLDEN SHOPPER GETS BUY AT HOME LESSON
…last week a certain Golden lady
read in a glaring advertisement in a paper of a neighboring city where a set of silver would be specially priced for one day only, and was a BIG BARGAIN. Next morning she could hardly wait to take the car and get into the pushing, crowding mass that was waiting to get into the store. She finally got in, made her purchase, and started out. On her way she crushed her hat, lost her glasses and was stepped on about a hundred times.

When she got home she unpacked her silver set, put it on the buffet, and ran over to her neighbor’s to tell her to come over and look at her bargain. On entering the neighbor’s home she was surprised to find a set identical to her own gracing the table. Of course, during the conversation it developed that the friend had made her purchase at home and had saved $2.50 besides car fare, to say nothing of the unpleasantness of being jostled around.
