GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
First, a correction: I gave the wrong link for the Kevin Costner movie in yesterday’s History Moment. American Flyers is available here: youtube.com/watch?v=daakSZt62ik. Again, you’ll have to watch a couple of commercials, and the Golden segment starts after 1 hour 36 minutes and runs through 1 hour 41 minutes.
The May 25, 1933 Colorado Transcript wrote about the clock in the window of Tierney Jewelry:
Like a veritable wheel of fortune when the hands on the wonderful clock in a display window at the Tierney jewelry store stop, as they are set to do early next week, two fortunate members of the Golden High school 1933 graduation class–one a boy and the other a girl–will be awarded a beautiful Bulova watch by the Messrs. Tierney. The boy will receive the famous Round the World model, while the girl will be presented with the equally renowned Miss Liberty model, a new slender Baquette.
There are 47 names with photos on the clock–21 boys and 26 girls–and when the clock stops ticking the hour and minute hands will rest on the names and pictures of the two graduates who will receive the beautiful watches.
The promotion was designed to draw attention to the clock, which was for sale at the store.
Naturally you are interested in this unique contest and a visit to the Tierney Jewelry will give you full details.
Coors and Duvall Watches
Watches were a popular graduation gift–useful, valuable, and meant to last a lifetime. For many years (beginning in 1908), the Golden High School graduating boy with the best academic record was given a watch by Adolph Coors. Beginning in 1923, George Duvall, owner of Duvall-Davison Lumber, contributed a watch for the girl with the best academic record. The last incidence I found for these two awards was the 1966 Golden High School graduation.
The Coors and Duvall watches were such an honor that they were sometimes mentioned in the winners’ obituaries.
FRED SCHODER (1893-1970)
Fred Schoder attended the Golden schools and graduated from Golden High School in 1909. He was awarded the Coors watch at that time for attaining the highest scholastic rating in this class. Two years before, his brother Carl received the Coors watch when he graduated from Golden High.
