Golden History Moment
The January 21, 1970 Golden Daily Transcript reported that Highway 58 construction was proceeding apace:
Workmen prepare for a final cross-section to determine the amount of earth which has been moved by the contractor on the Highway 58 bypass. The next step in the nearly two mile section is paving the four lanes. District 6 of the Colorado State Hwy. Dept. reports paving will begin in the spring as soon as weather permits. They also expect to construct a bridge across 44th Ave. to the east and have that portion of 58 to I-70 completed sometime in 1971.
Planning for Highway 58 had begun in the 1950s. At that time, traffic between Golden and Denver had to use city streets–mostly Colfax, 32nd, and 44th Avenue. The streets were overcrowded and, of course, impeded with lots of stoplights. The new highway provided a direct link to Interstate 70. I-70 itself was new at that time. The segment from Kipling to Ward Road had only been completed in 1968.*
