GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The October 3, 1963 Colorado Transcript announced the death of Gertrude Bell. Bell Junior High was still under construction at the time. The article says that she was born in Golden in 1876 and attended the South School. She taught 43 years in Golden before retiring in 1947. She taught at Fairmount for one year, the North School for 33 years (six of them as principal), and Central School (later called Mitchell) until she retired.

To the young people who will attend “her” school beginning December 2 and for generations to come the name “Gertrude Bell” will have little significance, but to thousands of children taught by Mrs. Bell over nearly half a century the school will stand as a well-deserved monument to one of Colorado’s outstanding educators and human beings”

Mrs. Bell is buried in the Golden Cemetery.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
