GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
by Guest Historian Paul Haseman
Grand Entry Pillars: Lookout Mountain Road (aka the Lariat Trail) was built in main part by Golden contractor, William (“Cement Bill”) Williams. He conceived of the road in 1910 and began surveying the route on 10 October 1911. The road was funded from his own pocket, by the State, the City of Denver, Denver Mountain Parks and Adolph Coors, among others. At the summit, a memorial to “Cement Bill” overlooks the road at the Buffalo Bill Museum parking lot.
This five-mile twisting route rose 1100 feet and passed under the School of Mine’s “M”, built by Mines students and faculty in 1908. On 16 July 1913, the Lariat Trail was linked with the Denver Mountain Parks Road coming from Morrison to the south to form the completed Lariat Loop. Workers on the road included stranded employees of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, which the Denver Sheriff had seized for unpaid debts.
The now completed Lariat Loop linked several Denver Mountain Parks to include the 1100-acre Genesee Park, stocked in 1913 with a buffalo herd, which can still be viewed on occasion on the north side of I-70 near Genesee. The scenic Lookout Mountain Road was very popular and served as the gateway to the mountains via an extension west to Idaho Springs, also built Cement Bill. Ever the entrepreneur, Williams purchased a fleet of Stanley Steamer autos for tours up Lookout Mountain and beyond. He garaged his fleet at 1305 Washington Ave in Golden.
This road from Golden became the principal route west for more than 20 years from 1913 until 1937, when US 40 was pushed up Mt. Vernon Canyon (now I-70) and further west to Salt Lake City on a route surveyed many years earlier for the Overland Stage Co. by Golden’s Edward Berthoud.
Perhaps Lookout Mountain Road’s most heavily traveled day was 3 June 1917 when 20,000 attended the largest funeral in Colorado history – that of Buffalo Bill Cody. Many attending the ceremony, presided over by Golden’s William Parfet, Jr, traveled up unpaved Lookout Mountain Road.
Entry to this scenic Lariat Loop was made through a Grand Entry. The southern Loop Grand Entry in Morrison near State Rte 74 is long gone but the entry in Golden remains as majestic as ever. It was completed a month after Cody’s funeral, on 12 July 1917 at the cost of $2000. In 1990 Lookout Mountain Road was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is also an integral part of the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway.
