GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The February 3, 1910 Colorado Transcript announced that Golden’s Masonic Lodge had recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Masons are an international social and philanthropic group. Golden’s Masonic Lodge was chartered in 1860, making it the oldest in Colorado. In fact, it predates statehood by 16 years!
The group had many homes throughout its history, including William Loveland’s first store (now the site of the pocket park, Loveland Gardens); the Loveland Block at 12th and Washington (now the Old Capitol Grill), the Linder Block (now Gateway Station/Indulge Bistro & Wine Bar), and Odd Fellows Hall (the second floor of 1106 Washington Avenue (map).
They had always planned to build their own lodge building. At one time they owned the lot that now holds the Buffalo Rose Events Center, and at another they owned property on 12th Street, between Jackson and Ford. At last, in 1950, they built their permanent home.
On March 11, 1950, Golden’s Masons gathered at 1106 Washington Avenue (map), where they had been holding meetings since 1915. They marched from there to the future lodge site at 400 10th to dedicate the site and lay the cornerstone. Golden’s High School band accompanied the parade.
As reported by the Transcript, the new building would be 75′ x 100′ with a full basement, kitchen, and storage facilities. They had their first meeting in the not-quite-complete hall on June 4, 1951.
The Masons and their affiliated groups (Eastern Star, Job’s Daughter’s, DeMolay, etc.) still meet there. The building is available for rent at very reasonable rates and the 4th Sunday of every month they host a pancake breakfast from 8-11AM!
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866.
