Golden History Moment
You probably already know about Golden’s major historic industries–paper mill, flour mills, mines, smelters–not to mention the giant brewery on the east side of town.
Obscure Industries
Articles from the 1870s reference some lesser-known Golden industries, including a match factory, a mattress factory, and a few different cigar factories. I can’t discover much about any of them, but I do know that the match factory was located on Ford Street. The mattress factory used machinery for picking rags and washing them.
The earliest reference I find to a cigar factory was from 1872, and the last was 1905, so that industry had some staying power. One factory produced “Golden City Belles,” while another made “Golden Reds.”
