GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
Don Cameron sent me a scan of this postcard and asked if I could date it. That’s one of my favorite games! I look for landmarks shown in the picture and use them to identify the latest the image could be and the earliest it could be. Here’s what I came up with:
1 Geology Museum is missing, so it’s earlier than 2003.
2 Golden Hotel is missing, so it’s pre-1999.
3 History Park is missing, so it’s pre-1999.
4 Mitchell School is still on 12th Street, so it’s pre-1998.
5 The Visitors Center hasn’t been built, so it’s pre-1997.
6 The Community Center hasn’t been built, so it’s pre-1994.
7 The CSM-RI buildings are still there, so it’s pre-1994.
So the photo was taken some time during or prior to 1994.
The early end of the range was a little more challenging. The Coors Office Building appears in the picture, and that opened in 1981, so the photo was no earlier than 1981.
My last pair of clues came from looking at a similar-but-slightly-newer postcard. First, I noticed that the “Golden Centre” building had appeared downtown–that’s the two-story building with arches. Second, I noticed that townhouses had been built at 12th and Maple. According to the County Assessor’s office, both were built in 1984.
Since those buildings don’t appear on Don’s postcard, the picture must have been taken before 1984. That puts the date of the postcard between 1981 (Coors office building) and 1984. Voila!
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
