Birdseye View of Construction in Golden - June, 2025

Drone footage of several construction projects currently in Golden - watch it

Pat Klein has produced a video update of our several construction projects around town. He's been doing this at approximately two-month intervals, and it's fun to watch the buildings progress. He's been documenting the new Mines apartments (west of Hwy 6), the new undergrad dorm (19th & Illnois), "The Col" (17270 Colfax), Ulysses Park, Lena Gulch, Canyon View Apartments (off Golden Gate Canyon Road), and Clayworks (9th and Ford).

Watch it here!

We now have the background to dig deeper into an example of 2024 property taxes that are being paid in 2025.

As a reminder for 2024 property taxes that are paid in 2025,

Property Taxes Due = (Assessed Value – any applicable adjustment) x Assessment Rate x Mill Levy

Our previous examples (properties in Golden but not downtown) were these.

  • Residential property:  ($750,000 - $55,000) x 6.7% x .0908060 = $4,228.38
  • Business property:   ($750,000 - $30,000) x 27.9% x .0908060 = $18,199.73

These taxes would be distributed as follows (residential, business)

  • Golden Fire Department Fund: $4,636,000

The additional amounts from property taxes for downtown properties based on the dedicated mill levies are estimated at these amounts in the 2025 Budget (pages 49 and 50).

Golden History: Making Do and Doing Without

Power Company Ad, Urging People to Buy War Bonds – June 4, 1942 Colorado Transcript

The June 4, 1942 Colorado Transcript showed Golden on a wartime footing, with many articles about rationing and housing shortages.

Sugar was strictly rationed, but special applications were being accepted to allow families to can their summer produce. Tires were becoming increasingly scarce. The tire rationing board published a list every month, giving the name of every person who had been permitted to buy a new or used tire.

Even use of telephone lines was restricted. Wartime shortage of materials made it difficult for the phone company to maintain or expand their service offerings.

The application of these restrictions will undoubtedly mean inconvenience for some people–part of the price of protecting our liberty–but we ask your fullest cooperation, for the restrictions will mean that more lead, iron, steel, zinc, copper and rubber used in telephone equipment will now go into arms.

Camp George West in 1937 – Golden History Museum collection – enlarge

There was a nationwide housing shortage, and Golden was no exception. New wartime industries were creating the need for housing near government plants, but building materials were in short supply. The June 4th paper included an editorial stating that Camp George West should be put to use. The Transcript noted that 2500-3000 men and officers could be housed there.
