CITY MEETING

Historic buildings slated for demolition on 9th and Cheyenne Streets – enlarge

6:30PM Historic Preservation Board Meeting @ City Hall

In June, the owner of two properties in the 8th and 9th Street Historic District approached HPB will his plan to demolish the homes and outbuildings at 916/918 9th Street (map) and 920 9th Street (map) & 815 Cheyenne Street (map). Since the buildings are located in a Historic District, he needs a “Certificate of Appropriateness” from the Board, signifying their agreement with the plan.

The Board (HPB) was disappointed at the prospect of losing more historic buildings, so they asked the owner to delay demolition for 180 days while they conducted a Historic Structure Assessment on the properties.

They hired architect Peter Ewers to assess the buildings. Since Mr. Ewers did not have the owner’s permission to step on the property or enter the buildings, the evaluation was limited to external features. His assessment includes several recommendations, such as new windows and various repairs.

HPB will ask the owner to consider making those repairs and preserve the buildings, but they have no legal power to insist that he do so. If he doesn’t agree to keep the buildings, they will grant the Certificate of Appropriateness that he needs in order to proceed with his plans.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Great Moments in Feminist History:

The September 13, 1945 Colorado Transcript announced that three women had served on a jury. That was the first time Jefferson County had permitted women to serve on juries.

In order to accommodate women members the Board of County Commissioners fitted a room in the courthouse for their use. In case a jury should be unable to reach a decision before nightfall, sleeping rooms will be provided in the Court House Annex on the North side.

(The Court House Annex was the old North School).

The September 13, 1956 Colorado Transcript reported that two women students had enrolled as freshmen at the Colorado School of Mines.

Both of them seem to feel that they were not being taken seriously about their educational intentions. “They seem to think that we might be lost,” Barbara said and Pat added that the usual question is, “How long before you’ll be leaving?”

Their enrollment brought the total number of women enrolled at Mines to three.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
