Bring a friend, a neighbor, or a family member (or all three) and introduce them to OLLI. Refreshments will be provided. Please come join us as we celebrate the upcoming semester offerings!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with OLLI, it’s a learning program for students 50+. They cover a wide variety of topics, depending on what their volunteer facilitators have offered to teach. They normally charge a flat rate for as many courses as you want to take, but this fall they have an introductory offer for new students–$50 for a single class. They also offer scholarships for those who want to participate but are financially unable.

They offer classes at several locations around the metro area. Their closest location to us is the Jefferson Unitarian Church on 32nd St. They also offer online classes. See their fall catalog (Unitarian Church starts on p. 31).

I’m teaching an online Golden History class again this fall. We’ll meet (virtually) Wednesday afternoons from 1-3PM. (p. 113 in the online catalog) The last time I taught this, during the COVID shut-down, I was pleasantly surprised to meet some of my subscribers. I hope some of your can join this session!

Golden History Moment

Passenger Train from Central City, circa 1905 – Denver Public Library Western History Collectionenlarge

The August 11, 1921 Colorado Transcript announced that the Colorado & Southern railroad (formerly the Colorado Central) was resuming passenger service between Golden and Central City. A sudden storm ten days earlier had washed out track and bridges.

The Transcript expressed relief that the railroad hadn’t used the damage as an excuse to end service. Automobiles were making inroads into passenger service by that time, and the railroad was losing money on that line. Passenger service to the mountain towns ended in 1927. Freight service continued until 1941, at which time the rails were removed.

The plan to replace the railroad with a highway was delayed by World War II, as all labor and materials were diverted to the war effort. The highway through Clear Creek Canyon opened in 1952.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
