As in previous years, the Food & Nourishment Task Force of Jefferson Unitarian Church will hold the Plant & Goodie Sale, cooperating with Earthlinks of Denver. For many years JUC has supported this non-profit organization helping homeless and low income people in the poorest neighborhood of Denver https://www.earthlinks-colorado.org/.

You can choose from over 1000 seedlings grown in my greenhouse, several tomato and pepper varieties, herbs, flowers, veggies, groundcovers, berry shrubs, and of course, also more goodies!

You decide what is comfortable for you to donate. The Food & Nourishment Task Force wants to encourage you to grow food and enjoy flowers in your garden for your patios or windowsill boxes.

Please support this fundraiser by donating baked goodies and extra plants you may have in your garden. We also appreciate the return of used empty flowerpots. Please bring your donations to the garden during sales hours or by appointment.

The Plant Sale access is from the alley between 20th and 21st Streets. (Please note that on Friday, Monday and Tuesday until 5:00 p.m. you can only park in the alley due to parking restrictions on our block).

Golden History Moment

The May 13, 1975 Golden Transcript announced an upcoming open house at the “Breeden mansion.” The house would be open to the public for the first time.

What’s that you say? You’ve never heard of it? We now call it the Boettcher Mansion. It’s located on Lookout Mountain, next to the Lookout Mountain Nature Center.

If you’ve visited the Mansion, you probably think of it as a fine craftsman home, beautifully preserved. It was not always thus.

The mansion was built in 1917 as a summer home for the Boettcher family. In 1968, Charline Breeden, a granddaughter of the Boettchers and owner of the house, donated it–along with the surrounding 110 acres–to Jefferson County. The gift came with the stipulation that the County must keep it for public use and could not sell it.

The County Commissioners weren’t quite sure what to do with it, and during the several years they spent deciding, the house deteriorated and was vandalized. A 1974 Transcript article detailed some of the repairs needed: “roof, broken windows, plaster, heating system, electricity, plumbing, floors, carpeting, exterior and interior painting, new locks, drapes, ventilation, outside steps and porches.”

The house is now rented as a venue for meetings and social events. The grounds form the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve. The Nature Center was originally housed in the mansion’s garage, but is now a stand-alone structure.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
