GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

This engraving of Golden’s Smelters Row appeared in a book: Fossett, Frank. Colorado, Its Golden and Silver Miners, Farms and Stock Ranges, and Health and Pleasure Resorts – Tourist Guide to the Rocky Mountains. New York, C.G. Crawford, Printer and Stationer, 1880. – enlarge

The Colorado Central Railroad reached Golden in 1870. While it was useful to have a railroad between Denver and Golden, the main reason for the railroad’s existence was to connect to the mining towns. The railroad reached Black Hawk in 1872, Idaho Springs and Georgetown in 1877, and Central City in 1878.

With its ready supply of coal, Golden’s leaders saw the town as a logical place to locate smelters. The railroad would bring ore from the mining towns and Golden smelters would reduce it to pure metal.

The February 1, 1871 Colorado Transcript (before the railroad had reached the mining towns) included an article explaining why Golden would be a good place for smelters.

We believe our people are fully awake to the importance of the establishment here of works for the treatment of ores, and whenever means for cheap transportation are provided will give every encouragement in their power to those who will erect such works. We believe this point to be the best and most natural one for the treatment of the ores of Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties, and our citizens are using their utmost endeavors to push forward our railroad to the mountains…. Here at the natural outlet for the mines of those counties and the others farther west and south we have in abundance nearly all the indispensable articles required for carrying on smelting works upon a large scale, and we have no fears that those who shall erect such works in the valley will look further than Golden for localities.

Golden had many different smelters over the years, most located on the north side of the Creek, across from Coors. None were great, long-term successes. This may be because smelters are dependent on many variables, including supply from the mines, the price of metals, and competition from other smelters.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
