What’s Happening in Golden Today?
9AM Public Art Commission Meeting @ City Hall
The tiles embedded in the sidewalk behind the library have not held up well, and the Public Art Commission is considering removing them from the public art collection. They will hold a public hearing this morning, so the public has a chance to weigh in on their decision. See the meeting packet to learn more about the deaccessioning process.
Last year’s tiny art projects were very popular. The Commission will discuss commissioning more tiny art projects this year. They also have budget this year to commission one or more major art pieces.
Community groups sometimes request a specific subject for a public art installation; for instance, the Heritage Dells neighborhood organized and raised funds for the elk statue on Heritage Road. The Fire Department wants to partner with the City to commission a statue of firefighters. Another group has been working to add some women to our public art collection. The Commission has recently unveiled their policies regarding community-inspired art. Suggestions for community art are due on March 31st.
The public is welcome to attend this meeting or send public comment to pac@cityofgolden.net.

Affordable Housing Project
On January 10th, I mentioned that Habitat for Humanity was planning to build 125 housing units on the former Xcel property at 17805 South Golden Road (map). City Council voted to write a letter supporting a grant application for the project. Councilor Don Cameron issued his monthly email on Tuesday, and in it, he mentioned that the sale did not go through…so we’ll have to wait and see what happens next with the property.

Golden History Moment
Dick Jancke, former manager of the Golden Gem Theatre, returned to this city this week, and is making arrangements to open a bowling alley in the Preuss building, adjoining the Castle Rock Lunch and the Gem Theatre. Mr. Jancke plans to open the Alleys about March 15.
Colorado Transcript – March 2, 1939
The bowling alley appears in the photo above, so that started me on a round of one of my favorite games: Date That Photo!
1 The bowling alley opened in 1939, so it was later than 1939.
2 Safeway opened in 1934 and moved to Ford Street in 1950…so the photo was sometime before 1950.
3 The Gem Theatre changed its name to The Golden Theatre in 1949, so it was before 1949.
4 Alpine Drug opened in 1923, changed its name to Golden pharmacy in 1955 and closed in 1956…so that doesn’t narrow the range.
5 The pharmacy at 12th and Washington (originally the Hudson Pharmacy, later Jack’s Pharmacy) opened in 1941 and closed in about 1979…so the photo was taken after 1941.
That narrows it to after 1941 (when Hudson/Jack’s Pharmacy opened) and before 1949 (when the theatre changed its name).
6 The best clue turned about to be the name of the hotel, which went through several names during the Depression and War years:
1925 Hotel Berrimoor
1932 Cody Hotel
1937 Golden Hotel
1943 LaRay Hotel
1948 The Holland House
1991 Table Mountain Inn
The sign and awning on the hotel say “LaRay,” so the photo was taken between 1943 and 1948.
Do you see anything that narrows it more?
