6:30PM Historic Preservation Board Meeting @ City Hall
The owner of several buildings in the 8th and 9th Street Historic District (map) plans to demolish them and is asking the Historic Preservation Board for a Certificate of Appropriateness, indicating agreement with the plan. The house at 916/918 9th Street was built in 1875, as was 920 9th Street. 815 Cheyenne Street was built in 1890. The owner has not provided the future plans for the property.

The Historic Preservation Board can delay the demolition for a few months, but it does not have the authority to prevent the demolition.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

State Industrial School (later renamed Lookout Mountain School for Boys) in 1928
State Industrial School (later renamed Lookout Mountain School for Boys) in 1928 – enlarge

The State Industrial School opened in 1881. The School was built with capacity for 50 students/inmates. There were only three boys there when the School opened in July. Their ages were 6, 8, and 14. Two more boys joined them in September. By December, there were 40 boys, and the governors announced that–unless the state increased their appropriation–they had reached capacity.

Here’s an interesting fact: when the school opened, parents, as well as courts, could commit boys to the school. In at least one case a boy was sent there because his parents had died and there was no one left to care for him.
