The September 17, 1903 Colorado Transcript celebrated the completion of Stratton Hall, the new metallurgy building on the School of Mines campus. “It is a grand addition to the already extensive plant of the school and will allow of a large addition to the student list.” The article mentioned that the school hoped to build a power house next, to be located west of the new metallurgy building. The power house appears in the postcard above.
The building was funded by a donation of $25,000 from the estate of W.S. Stratton–the Cripple Creek mining magnate. They were still working on a tunnel that would connect Stratton with the other campus buildings, to hold sewage and heating pipes and electrical wires. The new hall was wired with electricity sufficient to power 3,000 lights.
