GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The December 10, 1942 Colorado Transcript described Golden’s transition to wartime fuel rationing.
FROM A THOUSAND TO ONE
“FILL ‘EM UP” was the order of motorists for three days before gasoline rationing went into effect. “‘Em” meant everything from a 50 gallon drum to a pop bottle in which to drain the hose. Filling stations that sold from 1,000 to 1,500 gallons on Monday, November 30, only sold from one to a dozen gallons on the first day of rationing, Tuesday, December 1. That is one reason why rationing had to be. On the other hand, as in sugar rationing, allowances were made for canning and other things, folks who really need gas for purposes not inconsistent with the was effort should file their requests with their local Rationing Board–the Board can’t help you unless they know your particular needs, and maybe even then they can’t, but there is no harm in asking.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
