The Village Shopping Center – South Golden Road and Johnson Road – enlarge

The September 23, 1977 Golden Transcript announced that Council had delayed approval of a plan to rezone 6-1/2 acres at South Golden Road and Johnson Road. The Lunnonhaus apartments (now called Summit View) had opened in 1973. The same developers now proposed to build a shopping center on adjacent land. It took several more years for the zoning approval and the financing to come together. The Village shopping center opened in 1985.

The Golden Transcript highlighted South Golden Road in the July 28, 1981 issue:

Twenty years ago the area was predominantly rural with a few homes scattered about here and there. A decade or so ago a couple of businesses, a few more homes and an apartment complex moved into the area. In the early to mid-1970s, the area experienced rapid growth, due in large part to the opening of Lunnanhaus Village, which prompted the appearance of many new businesses.

Art owen, general manager of the Golden Area Chamber of Commerce, recalled that in the late 1940s, the only development per se to be found on South Golden Road was Camp George West (which is still there).

Hal Stockment…concurred with Owen’s assessment: “It was a little bit like a cow pasture.”

Far fewer businesses on South Golden Road in 1981! Golden Transcript – July 28, 1981 – enlarge
