Golden History Moment
The September 15, 1927 Colorado Transcript reported that the School of Mines had purchased a house near the campus, with the option to purchase the entire block on which it was located–between 13th and 14th, Illinois and Maple.
The school plans no immediate expansion, according to President Coolbaugh, but it is best to be prepared for such emergencies, he contended. The legislature is making no provision for Mines buildings, but eventually it will be necessary for the school to expand and Dr. Coolbaugh is preparing for that time by taking an option on the most desirable block available.
The article went on to list several offices that were being moved into the house, including the English and Economics departments, the Oredigger (school newspaper) and Prospector (yearbook). One room was going to be used as a laboratory for the geology department.
Ten years later, in 1937, they demolished the house and outbuildings in preparation for building two new buildings–Steinhauer Field House and Volk Gymnasium.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
