Today’s GURA and DDA Meetings
GURA (Golden Urban Renewal Authority) and DDA (Downtown Development Authority) hold joint control over the “Legacy Fund.” This was nearly $1.8 million that was left in GURA’s treasury when they finished their 25 year project to revitalize downtown Golden. Both organizations are interested in helping to make the Astor House habitable once again, as it is the last piece of blighted property in downtown.
City Council is considering two proposals from local non-profit organizations who would like to lease the Astor House for a long-term period–Foothills Art Center and the Golden Civic Foundation. Council would like to have a commitment from GURA and DDA that they will use $500K from the Legacy Fund to revitalize the Astor House.
City Staff is suggesting that the money be considered a loan–if the city sells the Astor House, the money should be paid back to the Legacy Fund with interest. GURA and DDA board members would prefer to work directly with the organization whose proposal is chosen, rather than committing to provide $500K to whoever Council picks. Both boards have meetings today to discuss these issues. Learn more….
Tonight’s Bootleggers Program
Jefferson County was such an active center for moonshining, bootlegging, speakeasies, and roadhouses that the Rocky Mountain News stated that no one from Jeffco should be allowed into Denver! This program explores the reasons behind Prohibition (1920-1933), how the liquor laws were violated in Jeffco, who was responsible for enforcing them, and how Prohibition was finally rejected. It is narrated by JCHC member John Steinle, author, historian, and former History Education Supervisor for Jeffco Open Space. You can access the program via You Tube.
