Marcie Wright will present Depression Era Quilts. Most every quilter is familiar with what we call Depression Era quilts. Quilts are easy to identify because of their color scheme, pastel prints, usually somewhat scrappy design, which was usually set with a plain white cotton for background. These quilts were the product of the Great Depression, which lasted from 1930 to 1940, and were made from small scraps left over from other garments, and often times incorporating feedsacks. More information

Golden History Moment:
Heart and Soul of Golden

The Jefferson Symphony had planned to present their Winter Concert this afternoon at the Green Center. Unfortunately, due to the recent rise in COVID cases they decided it was safest to cancel this one. Let’s hope that conditions improve in time for their March 27th concert, which will feature the winner of this year’s JSO Young Artists Competition, Ji Eun Park.

First Concert as the “Golden Ensemble” – Colorado Transcript – June 18, 1953

This is the 69th season for the Jefferson Symphony, making them one of the oldest cultural organizations in town. The group was formed in 1953 as the Mines Chamber Ensemble. Their first concert took place in the old Methodist church building, at 14th and Washington.

By 1955 they had become a Symphony – Colorado Transcript – November 17, 1955

They quickly found that many talented musicians wanted to join, and before long they were big enough to change their name from “Golden Ensemble” to “Golden Symphony Orchestra.” Many of the musicians came from outside of Golden, so in 1972 they became the “Jefferson Symphony Orchestra.”

The group has been fortunate in the long-term commitment of its leaders. T. Gordon Parks served as their Music Director and Conductor from 1962-1994. Jack Galland was their business manager for more than 50 years. Dr. Antonia Joy Wilson was their conductor from 1994-1999, and Dr. William Morse has led the group since 1999.

Jefferson Symphony Concert in Parfet Park – August, 2018 – enlarge

The Symphony performed in the auditorium at the Central School (later Mitchell Elementary) until the “new” Golden High School was built in the mid-1950s. They used the high school’s auditorium until the Green Center was built on the School of Mines Campus in 1972. The 1400-seat Bunker Auditorium in the Green Center has been their home for the past 40 years. In addition to the indoor concerts at the Green Center, the Symphony often does summer concerts in Jefferson County parks–including the August concert in Parfet Park.

The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra will celebrate their 70th season next year–an amazing accomplishment for an all-volunteer organization.
